If the pan is upright, then the two layers can be placed on top of each other, so the pan closes well. If the lid is tilted, the two parts separate, the lid can serve as a colander. The flat shape of the lid makes it easy to stack, so you will have less trouble storing this lid. You can clean the lid by putting it in the dishwasher.
